VW Sanburn is one of the largest and longest established suppliers of used and new spare parts for Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda motor vehicles in the United Kingdom. It is a family run business having been founded by David in 1986 who was joined by his father, Rodney two years later.
Originally based in Napton on the Hill the business moved to its present location in Coventry in 1996. Opposite the business in Judds Lane, what once was an old gas works has been transformed into the ultra modern Ricoh Arena, home to Coventry City Football Club.
Operating now a DVLA approved End of Life Vehicle ATF facility the nature of the business has changed dramatically over the last few years. Protecting the environment is now recognised as being of paramount importance and the methods employed to dismantle vehicles and dispose of potentially hazardous waste must meet with the approval of the Environment Agency. These changes, whilst being both necessary and desireable add considerable costs to the running of the business.
In order to meet these challenges the business has diversified into Engine Re-manufacturing and Metal Recycling, both activities adding important income streams. Concentrating mainly on later diesel engines, VW Sanburn has built a solid reputation for providing re-manufactured engines at a price not dissimilar to that asked by most other people for second-hand units.
What does the future hold? Who can tell but the move away from being so dependant on dismantling and selling second-hand car parts comes at a time when the cost of compliance with new legislation and increased competition from Eastern Europe both necssitate change. If the business is to succeed it must meet these new challenges.
